Design
The Print Shop is available to assist in the planning, and design of your printed materials. There is a Graphic Design/Prepress Specialist on staff who can help in the creative and prepress aspects of your document.
Brochures, logos, programs, postcards, newsletters and folders are just some of the items that can be designed at the Print Shop.
If you would like the Print Shop to design your document please call in advance to set up an appointment for a consultation. Things to consider are quantities, deadline and budget which will ultimately affect design, paper stock and ink(s) used. A good rule of thumb to follow is that the more colors in the piece the more time and money will be needed for prepress and printing.
PREPRESS
The definition of prepress is, in a nutshell, the preparation of a document before it goes to the printing press. Documents that are produced on the computer as well as those that are hard copy need to be formatted correctly for print.
With the wide use of computers in the home and workplace many people are doing their own desktop publishing. Unfortunately, many of the beautiful designs and layouts that are created are often not cost effective or practical for printing. Some of the most common problems we encounter with computer files are those in the area of electronic prepress and software/hardware. Many times disks will come with files created in applications that the Print Shop doesn't support (see Software for details).
One of the biggest problems encountered are disks missing files necessary for output. Take for example a PageMaker document. If the document includes graphics created in a paint or illustration program and/or special fonts these files must be included. If they are missing the document will not print out correctly and re-outputting the file can be costly. See File Information for details on how to submit jobs to the Print Shop.
ILLUSTRATION
Graphs, maps, charts, drawings, etc. can be custom ordered.
PHOTO RETOUCH/MANIPULATION
Photos can be touched up and manipulated to suit your printing requirements. Whether this means removing the background from a photo or creating a duotone.
SCANNING
Drawings, photos, and illustrations (up to 8" x 10") can be scanned and placed in your documents or saved to disk for later use. For helpful scanning tips click here.
TYPESETTING
Typesetting is one of the most basic and often used services in graphics/prepress. Forms, notepads, routing slips and business cards are typical typeset items.
